Heroes of Punch Champion James Vickers of Williams & Graham

James Vickers of Williams & GrahamHeroes of Punch Champion James Vickers of Williams & Graham

Moving on to compete in Punch Kings June 2

Congratulations to James Vickers, Williams & Graham barback that took the top spot in Industry Denver and Breckenridge Distillery’s Heroes of Punch last Wednesday. Stealing the show from 11 of Denver’s most talented bartenders, his promised 2-point handicap was not even needed to take the title. Holland Rock-Garden, the self-appointed coolest bartender of Green Russell who had taken the top prize for the Four Roses competition in the previous night came in close behind James. Blue River Punch was the name of the creation that James presented for judging that included Breckenridge Bourbon and his mother’s chai tea recipe stolen from a family recipe book.

Misprint: Holland was misquoted as Green Russell’s ‘best’ bartender and edit was made to correct his quote to Green Russell’s ‘coolest’ bartender. His last week of unrealized pretentiousness was a mistake in Industry Denver’s media translation and slipped through the edit [Kyle Dill, Editor, Industry Denver].

Andrew Friedman of Liberty Bar, Seattle WA

Nestled on the 15th Avenue corridor of Seattle’s Capitol Hill neighborhood, Liberty Bar is carving their reputation into the national cocktail scene as the bar of bartenders. Liberty, headed by Andrew Friedman is a relaxing neighborhood bar adorned with top shelf hospitality, good booze, and couches [the triple crown for me]. Having the opportunity to check out what Andrew has been doing for Washington’s industry community, his reach goes beyond human capacity– something bearing a resemblance to Stretch Armstrong. Justin Lavenue of Bitter Bar schedule to open new James Lee concept in Austin, Texas

In an attempt to reach a bit outside of the Denver border for a little bit of outside perspective, I first took a trip to Boulder to see what Justin Lavenue has been working on at the Bitter Bar. Having appeared most recently in the Pierre Ferrand Hospitality Mixoff and the Winter Talent Showcase that we put on last December, he’s no stranger to Denver’s bartending community. Justin also represents Dancing Pines, a local distillery that has been killing it for Colorado spirits in most recent months. We have chatted about doing this interview since about November or so and when I finally made it out of the city, I found myself wishing I had done it much sooner. My one word for the Bitter Bar is fun. Just a great overall feeling from the decor to the booze to the personalities, it’s just a real fun place to like, really chill out. Continue reading

Leigh Berry of Tom’s Urban 24

Having began my adventure in Denver with a position at Charlie Palmer’s District Meats, I came into contact with the rambunctious Leigh Berry that now graces presence to the bar at Tom’s Urban 24. When I walked into D-Meats, it was actually my very first encounter with a resident of the city. Leigh put on a pretty good manager face as we shared shop talk and I filled in my application. I wasn’t sure if I would get called for a formal interview or not, but two hours later I found a voicemail that went like this [literally, word for word]:

"Hi Kyle, this is Leigh from Districts Meats.
I am calling you to offer you a jooooob?"...
[yes, in the form of a question followed by a long pause]
"-Um, Kyle?"
[keep in mind, this is a voicemail]
"Ha...uh alright"
[end voicemail]

…And that is Leigh, who, for the next half a year, would help me grow my industry roots into Denver soil. A hands-on management philosophy earned a significant respect among the team that we worked with and can confidently say that she carries that quality with her in any environment. Having been in to see her behind the bar at Tom’s, the most prevalent thing I noticed was that the team is magnetic to Leigh.

But who knows why? The second your drink hits your ticket, she’s all over your ass. I have had conversations with Leigh over the bar that have been worthy of a good cry on my part, but she’ll always give a look back and give just enough smile to let you know she’s kidding. Leigh has been with the bar team at Tom’s since they opened last Halloween and it is already quite apparent that she has established her role as a leader among a sea of talented coworkers.  Continue reading

Kevin Burke

It’s always fun to see a little humor in a fancy-schmancy cocktail list. I came across the new cocktail menu at Colt & Gray a couple of weeks ago and had to sit down with Kevin Burke to talk about it. He built a great menu of cocktails, punches, and other libations that are completely influenced and branded to a movie in my personal favorites list, Zoolander [yeah, really!].  Continue reading

Gerard Collier of Corner House

Matt Selby’s newest creation hits the ground running this week, but a rich influence of locally acquired products gives the Corner House a history of its own. From the walls lined with Colorado’s beetle-stricken wood to barstools acquired from the Gaetano’s remodel and garage door pulled from Root Down, you can guess Gerard Collier has got his work cut out for him from behind the bar.
